Aswiftt Radio

In only 5 days time, yours truley will be featured on an interview segment on www.aswifttradio.com.  The interview will be heard internationally.  Let me say that again............internationally! Man, I never would've thought that people in a entirely different country would not only be able to listen, but would even have an interest in what I had to say.  I guess that means I must have done a few things right! At first I was excited but not really as excited as I'm probably supposed to be.  I'm not much of an attention whore, so the fact that it's international didn't really get the juices flowing for me until now! Right now I'm stoked! Couldn't be in a better mood about the opportunites that I have right in front of me and the endless list of possible opportunities that could lie ahead! Remember to tune in March 30th!!

"Des Henderson is not only a comedian, but he's also the long-standing host of the Sacramento Comedy Spot's weekly Sunday night open mic. If you've been doing comedy for any period of time in the capitol city, you've no doubt met him and seen him work. On this episode of the Junior & Leo Show podcast, we get to talk to Des about what it's like to host/MC of an open mic for as long as he has--much longer than seems to be the norm in most cases--as well as getting into how he develops material, what his hopes and aspirations are for his comedy career, and if he worries about his comedy coming back to haunt him in his day job or with family. Junior also tells a story about how Des was the first comedian in Sacramento that he stalked online in attempting to gain the courage to get up on stage for the first time."

Opportunities

In some cases opportunity knocks.  In other cases, you have to call opportunity up and invite them over to your house.  My point being that opportuinites are not only given but they can also be created.  At the moment I'm in talks with a few other fellow Sacramento Comedians about putting together a showcase style DVD.  In addition to that, I am also just a few signed documents away from confirming my guest apperance on ASWIFT RADIO! ( www.aswiftttradio.com ) And if that isn't cool enough I have just put the finishing touches on an incredible photo shoot with an amazing photographer/actor/comedian and good friend Jovon Torres. ( www.jovontorres.com ) I will post a slide show of the photo shoot here soon. Good things are on the horoizon! And it's all thanks to a little hustle.  The way I see it, you've basically got 3 choices.  You can wait for opportunity to come knocking.  You could invite opportunity over to your casa for a visit.  Or you can seek out opportunity, kidnap his ass, and hold him hostage until you get what you want.  The choice is yours.  I know what I'm gonna do.

Back in the Saddle

So you may have noticed about a two and a half year gap between my last posts.  The reason for that……..well…..... I’ve gotten a lot busier and lazier at the same time!  I can’t but the blame on just one of the two.  It’s the best of both worlds, my apologies.  I’m back now and let me tell you a lot has happened in those two and a half years.  I host a weekly open mic show at the Sacramento Comedy Spot called Open Mic Scramble and I’m the longest tenured MC to date.  Going on two years and counting.  I also hold the distinction of being the one and only “Stand up Shoot out Grand Champion” at the very same comedy club.  I’ve gotten the chance to see Dave Chappelle live and actually met him in person!  I’ve even met Tracy Morgan! I’ve hosted an outdoor modern arts festival of well over a five hundred people.  Most recently I was able to perform at probably the most prestigious comedy club that Sacramento has to offer, the Sacramento Punchline, and I kicked ass if I do say so myself.  I’ll post clips of that show as soon as I figure out how to work my damn camera.  The point is I’ve done a whole lot in my two and half year hiatus but I’ve returned pick up where I left off.  Beware…………..I’m back Bitches!

My First Hosting Experience

Hosting a comedy show is a great honor and something I'm really proud of accomplishing in only 6 short months. The overall general consensus is that the opening spot on a comedy show is almost always the hardest spot to be in. There are several reasons for this but the most obvious is that the audience is "cold." You basically have a group of strangers seated next to one another and eventhough they may be there for a comedy show, they are not quite in the laughing mode just yet. As the opener it is your job to get them warmed up for the next comedian and keep the show going. This is where your material will get the ultimate test as to how funny it is. My first go at it was no different.

Memorizing each comedians credits and announcements before hand turned out to be a bigger challenge for me than I anticipated. Lucky for me, I already knew most of the comics on this particular bill, so it wasn't really a huge problem. It also turned out to be a really great show. Overall, I think I did rather well and I only mispronounced one person's name but she was very forgiving. (Thanks Hailey!) The headliner that evening came up to me after the show and was really appreciative of how I got everyone involved, gave generous introductions and kept the show moving foward. Considering that this was my first time ever hosting a gig and the fact this guy has done thousands of shows all along the west coast and is also an extremely exceptional talent, I thought that was pretty high praise. I learned that being a host for a comedy show is not just about being funny. It's about doing what's best for the show as a whole and I'm all for that. I can't wait for my next opportunity to host again.
